Mechanical testing

  • Fluid loaded membrane bulging apparatus for both quasi-static and dynamic loading.
  • 25 ton servo-hydraulic MTS machine (Labview interfaced).
  • 15 ton Instron screw-driven machine machine (Labview interfaced).
  • 1 ton servo-hydraulic Instron machine (Labview interfaced).
  •  6 mm split Hopkinson (Kolsky) compression bars: 15-5 PH steel and 7075-T6 aluminum alloy
  • 12.5 mm split Hopkinson (Kolsky) compression bars: C300 Maraging steel, tungsten heavy alloy, 7075-T6 aluminum alloy + furnace.
  • 19 mm split Hopkinson (Kolsky) compression bars: C300 maraging steel and 7075-T6 aluminum alloy
  • 12.5 mm split Hopkinson (Kolsky) tension bars: 15-5 PH steel, C300 Maraging steel and 7075-T6 aluminum alloy
  • 50 mm helium/air gun for small projectiles and perforation studies. Maximum velocity 350 m/s.
  • 10 mm hail gun simulator.

High speed imaging

  • Kirana camera. 8 million frames/second, 180 images (924×768).
  • Cordin 530 camera with electric drive. 200.000 frames/second, 16 frames(1000×1000).
  • 4 strobe lights (Specialised Imaging).
  • Long working distance microscope (Infinity).

Materials Characterization

  • Standard mounting, cutting and polishing materialographic equipment, with a small chemical hood.
  • Nikon upright light microscope.
  • Struers Acutom 5 wafering diamond saw.
  • Struers Minitom, low speed wafering diamond saw.
  • Ultrasonic equipment (Lecoeur Electronique).
  • Ultrasonic pulser (Olympus)
  • Liquid nitrogen cooled 8 channel MCT infrared detector (Fermionics) . Home-made Schwartzchild 1:1 optical system.
  • Phillips XL90 scanning electron microscope with gold coating evaporator. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis system.

Data Acquisition

  • 2 Nicolet oscilloscope, 12 bit-4 channels.
  • National instruments data sampling system (16 channels -14 bit).
